The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Thursday affirmed that both the Special Electoral Boards (JEE) and the National Election Board (JNE) have decided on contested voting records and annulment actions "in accordance with the law and regulations in force."

In a statement, the OAS said that the Mission observed the work of both electoral bodies after Election Day and welcomed the fact that the Peruvian system provides the guarantees of due process.

In addition, the multilateral organization noticed that the political parties in contention had equal opportunities to present their claims and to be heard, and found that the decisions of the collegiate electoral bodies are deliberative, expeditious, and public.

"The Mission has observed that, up to this point, the actions of the jurisdictional bodies have adhered to current regulations," the document reads.

In addition, the Mission took note of the unusual resignation of Luis Arce from the plenary session of the National Election Board (JNE) at such a delicate moment in the electoral process.

In this sense, the EOM said that it is following up on the resolution of the JNE through which Arce has been suspended in order to facilitate the convocation of the corresponding representative of the Public Ministry, and in this way allow the JNE to comply with constitutional requirements and with the electoral calendar.

The Mission reiterated the importance for all political actors and citizens to behave responsibly and calmly, avoid the spread of fake news, and live up to the moment that the country is experiencing.

Moreover, it rejected the demonstrations that have taken place at the private homes of members of the electoral authorities which violate their right to privacy. "This behavior is unacceptable in a democracy."
