The
Member States of the European Union called on politicians and citizens in Peru to seek dialogue to find solutions to the current political crisis and thus prevent situations of violence and deaths.
In a statement, the aforementioned group of countries expressed sorrow for the deaths that occurred during the protests and riots in Puno.
"
The European Union and its Member States deeply lament the loss of human lives, as well as the injured people, including civilians and law enforcement officers, during the recent events in Juliaca,"
the document reads.
In this regard, they call for stopping violence, reducing tensions, and responding to the needs and aspirations of all Peruvian citizens.
"The European Union and its Member States call on all political actors and civil society to work within the constitutional framework, in a spirit of dialogue and cooperation," the statement said.
Condemning violence
In the same way, the statement expressed the European countries' condemnation of the use of violence by protesters, as well as the disproportionate use of force by law enforcement officers.
"It is essential to comply with the legal framework and human rights standards. It is urgent to investigate the facts and establish possible corrective measures to prevent more violence," it indicated.
In this context, the European Union welcomes the fact that the Peruvian Government has invited the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to visit the country.
