Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso on Thursday highlighted his country's growing presence in key international markets but said further efforts were needed to push development forward.

"Peru has sealed trade agreements with countries that account for 80 percent of the world's gross domestic product (GDP), and this is important because it means that we are playing in the big leagues; however, we need to continue expanding to other markets to bring development to the country," Humala said yesterday at a ceremony celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Peruvian Exporters' Association (ADEX).

The head of state reiterated that Peru has a solid economy to cope with the difficult economic situation in the world, noting that his government is investing heavily in building and improving infrastructure that connects the country with foreign markets.

"We need everyone to support this great project called Peru, which includes goals for the 2021-2023 period. And I mean everyone, and not just 40% or 60% of the population," said the president, who also highlighted the role of entrepreneurial women in the Peruvian economy.

Humala went on to thank local exporters for their contribution to the sustainable growth of Peru and vowed to work side-by-side with them to achieve further development and consolidate the State's presence in every corner of the country.

During the ceremony, which also served to inaugurate the new ADEX headquarters in Lima, the president was accompanied by Trade Minister Magali Silva, Production Minister Gladys Triveño, Foreign Minister Eda Rivas, and Women's Minister Ana Jara.
