The capital city in Peru and very much the centre of table tennis activity in the South American country, Lima was the home for an ITTF Level Two Coach Education course from November 22 to 27, 2010.

Organised under the auspices of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Development Programme and with the support of Olympic Solidarity, the expert on duty was Aleksey Yefremov of Belarus.

“The premises of the Peruvian Olympic Committee were the venue for the course which 17 people attended”, explained Aleksey Yefremov. “We had excellent conditions with well organised transportation, good quality tables, a Taraflex floor and a sufficient quantity of balls.”

Undoubtedly, the excellent local organisation facilitated a successful course and much credit must be given to Antonio Gomez, the forward thinking President of the Peruvian Table Tennis Federation.

Currently table tennis is thriving not only in Lima but also in Chiclayo near the border with Ecuador; furthermore, an ITTF Junior Circuit tournament is planned in 2011 in Peru, according to ittf.com.

“The course included theory and practical sessions plus video demonstrations, with each day being six to seven hours in duration”, continued Aleksey Yefremov. “The main object of the course was to introduce the Advanced Coaching Manual which includes four important aspects: advanced techniques, physiology, psychology and sports science.”

“In common with all such courses I have conducted there was a positive response”, added Aleksey Yefremov. “Many questions were asked, it was a pleasure to exchange ideas.”

“I liked this course very much, after receiving all the information I would like to return to play professionally again, six variations of topspins, seven variations of blocking, about 11 or 12 variations of receiving service, really it has opened my mind”, said Juan Costa, a former Peruvian national team member.

“Incredible, Aleksey let us practice all these variations of techniques, it was hard but very interesting, I really want to play again, of course now it’s too late for me and now for sure I will give all this knowledge to my players.”
