The coastal department of Tumbes in northern Peru celebrates Wednesday its 188th anniversary of independence day with a series of social and religious ceremonies.

Tumbes mayor Cesar Cuenca said celebrations will begin with a Te Deum Mass at the local church at 08:30 hours (13:30 GMT).

Afterwards, local authorities will participate in a civic parade where they will carry a Peruvian flag through the streets of downtown Tumbes.

At 09:45 hours, the youngest alderman, Manuel Flores Peña, will read the Declaration of Independence in a special ceremony to be attended by police, firefighters, military personnel, and former mayors.

The province of Tumbes is located in the extreme north western part of the country. Due to its geographic location, so close to the equatorial line, Tumbes has a hot and humid weather all year round.

Tourists visiting Tumbes can take part in several cultural activities such as October's Tourism Week and enjoy the beaches, the local cooking and above all the warm hospitality of its people.
