Sheylla Gutierrez case: Peru extradites Jossimar Cabrera to U.S. for femicide

15:43 | Lima, Dec. 12.

Peru handed over Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo to the United States on Friday.

He is accused of being responsible for the femicide of his wife, Sheylla Gutierrez Rosillo, whose body was found in the U.S. last August.

The extradition was ordered by the Preparatory Investigation Court of the Superior Court of Justice in Lima, after Cabrera Cornejo remained in preventive detention in Peru while the requests issued by the U.S. justice system were being processed.

As reported, Gutierrez Rosillo disappeared on August 9 and was found dead on the 16th of that month in U.S. territory.

Since then, Cabrera Cornejo was identified as the alleged perpetrator of the crime. After several days of being at large, he voluntarily surrendered to Interpol Lima on August 27, accompanied by his lawyer.

He was placed in preventive detention by order of the 31st Preliminary Investigation Court in Lima.

The process moved forward swiftly after he consented to the extradition.

On October 6, the Supreme Court's Permanent Criminal Chamber issued an advisory ruling declaring the extradition admissible, considering that the legal requirements had been met and that the accused must respond before the U.S. justice system.

On October 30, the Executive Branch, through the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (MINJUSDH), concluded the governmental phase with Supreme Resolution No. 236-2025-JUS.

It formally authorized the handover of the detainee to the United States of America.

With both steps completed, the extradition was carried out today.

It involved the physical handover of Cabrera Cornejo to U.S. agents who transferred him to face the corresponding criminal proceedings.

The extradition represents a key step toward ensuring justice in a case that shocked both the Peruvian and U.S. communities.

It also issues an institutional message reinforcing the fight against crimes of violence against women, while facilitating international cooperation to prevent impunity.
