Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Rafael Vela on Friday indicated that ex-President Alejandro Toledo must "compulsorily" comply with the pre-trial detention order issued against him.

It should happen as soon as he arrives in Peruvian territory, the prosecutor said during an interview with RPP Noticias.

"The concrete and real issue is that he has (been issued) a pre-trial detention order that must be compulsorily complied with," Vela emphasized.

Concerning an eventual request by the ex-president for house arrest citing health reasons, the prosecutor pointed out that the assessment should be made by the Office of Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez —the Public Ministry representative who prepared the accusation against Toledo.

Regarding the request issued by Perez for Vela to accompany the delegations of the police and the Prosecutor's Office that will bring the former president back to Peru, he indicated that this must be decided by the Attorney General's Office.

In this sense, he deemed as "imperative" that the U.S. justice system evaluate this issue "and take a measure similar to the one it had taken regarding Toledo," issuing an arrest warrant, so that the former First Lady does not leave the United States.

Failure to do so would allow Karp to travel to another territory, where any procedure to extradite her "would have to start from scratch," Vela warned.

Alejandro Toledo —who resided in the U.S.— is being investigated by the Peruvian justice for having allegedly received a bribe worth US$35 million from Brazilian construction companies to favor them in the bidding for the South Interoceanic Highway, while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).
