Peruvian State Attorney in the Lava Jato case, Silvana Carrion, affirmed the United States justice system currently evaluates the extradition request for former President Alejandro Toledo's wife, Eliane Karp, over the Ecoteva case.

"She faces a pending investigation over the Ecoteva case. There is also an extradition request for Mrs. Eliane Karp linked to said proceedings," Carrion said in remarks to TVPeru on Wednesday evening.

The State Attorney specified that Karp is not being prosecuted in the Interoceanic Highway project case —under which the extradition of former President Alejandro Toledo has been approved.

"She is being prosecuted in the Ecoteva case; she is not being prosecuted over the Interoceanic (Highway) project, the latter is the reason why Mr. Toledo will come (be extradited) to our country," she explained.

Carrion pointed out that the extradition request for Toledo's wife has already been filed, adding that the U.S. Department of Justice is in charge of said evaluation.

"This extradition file has already been submitted to the U.S. Government. We know that the Department of Justice is evaluating this extradition request and so as to be submitted to the Judiciary. That is the status of Mrs. Eliane Karp's extradition file," she pointed out.

Civil reparation

The State Attorney of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights also revealed that the civil compensation payment of S/1.8 billion (about US$470 million) has been requested.

Said amount must be paid by Alejandro Toledo and others involved in the Interoceanica (Interoceanic Highway) case.

"We have requested a civil compensation of approximately S/1.8 billion (about US$470 million) for all those who are being investigated in the case," she pointed out.

Alejandro Toledo —who resides in the U.S.— is being investigated by the Peruvian justice for having allegedly received a bribe worth nearly US$32 million from the Brazilian Odebrecht company to favor it in the bidding for the Interoceanic Highway while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).
