Peruvians celebrate Criolla Music Day

16:12 | Lima, Oct. 31.

Every October 31 marks a double celebration in Peru as children and grown-ups celebrate Halloween and Criolla Music Day, respectively, with various activities in peñas (Peruvian traditional bars), local parks, and malls.

Criolla Music Day is a celebration of said Peruvian music genre that blends the country's Spanish, Andean, and African influences.

At night, thousands of people are expected to flock to traditional peñas and restaurants in order to celebrate this day.

Throughout Latin America, the term "Criolla" originally referred to the descendants of Spanish settlers, but it subsequently came to designate that which was distinctively local.

The most popular styles of Peru's "Criolla Music" comprise Marinera, Peruvian Waltz, Tondero, Festejo, Zamacueca, and Landó, among other traditional dances.
