Peruvian exports total US$24.3 billion in first half of 2021

Peruvian exports amounted to US$24.3 billion in the first half of this year, up 48.3% compared to the same period in 2020 (US$16.4 billion), mainly driven by a surge in demand for some products such as copper, iron, and fish meal, the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) reported on Sunday.

According to Adex Chairman Erik Fischer, Peruvian exports have seen ten months of consecutive growth.

When referring to monthly data, he noted that rates remain high due to the low comparison base in 2020 because of the COVID-19 crisis: 17.1% in January, 22.7% in February, 49.9% in March, 108.4% in April, 107.2% in May, and 36.7% in June.

However, Fischer underlined that last June's amount (US$3.84 billion) was lower than that of the same month in 2019, that is, before the pandemic (US$3.97 billion).

In a report on Peru's exports in June, the Association of Peruvian Exporters' Global Business and Economy Research Center (Cien-Adex) indicated that traditional exports (US$17.2 billion) increased 51.4% due to the good performance in the mining sector as they accounted for 61% of total sales.

In the case of mining —whose shipments abroad rose 48.4% to US$14.8 billion— copper and gold were the main exported products.

Such sector was followed by fishing, with US$1.31 billion in sales (174.7%); hydrocarbons, with US$920 million (20.6%); and primary agriculture, with US$130 million (9.9%).

The principal destinations for Peruvian exports included China (US$8.12 billion), Canada (US$1.13 billion), and South Korea (US$1.12 billion), with positive variations of 93.7%, 23%, and 19.2%, respectively.

Other major destinations among the top 10 included India, Japan, United States, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany.
