The 11 sailing events of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will take place in the Chinese coastal city of Qingdao.
The Olympic Sailing Competition will take place from the 9-21 August, with the Medal Races to decide the 2008 medallists held from 16-21 August. 22-23 August are scheduled as reserve days. Gold medals will be decided in eleven Olympic sailing events, featuring a total of 400 sailors.
Sailing first became an Olympic sport in Paris in 1900, where time handicaps were used to adjudicate the race. The race format and the classes of competing boats have changed frequently since then. Olympic racing is now conducted with boats categorised into one-design classes based on similar weights and measurements.
