Peru's Health Min: Efforts will be doubled to face eventual third COVID-19 wave

19:07 | Lima, Aug. 2.

Peru's health system will double efforts to face an eventual third wave of COVID-19 in the country, Health Minister Hernando Cevallos affirmed on Monday.

The government official claimed that the first challenge for his administration will be to prevent the pandemic from mercilessly harming the population, as was the case during the first wave.

After congratulating the outgoing health minister, Oscar Ugarte, Cevallos called on the Minsa staff, as well as professional organizations and associations, to continue working together in the fight against the pandemic and to ensure that access to health services becomes a right for everyone.

"This means we need to make a concerted effort among all healthcare workers, as well as professional associations, keeping in mind that no one is dispensable, that we need to join together not only in day-to-day work, but also in the preparation and perfection of strategies in every corner of the country," he underlined.

In this regard, the Cabinet member stressed the need to strengthen the primary care level, which has been in decline for decades in the country, to bring it closer to the population in order to face the pandemic in better conditions.

"We have to continue and try to improve. It is not easy, its is not simple amid the political, social, economic, and labor crisis in the country, but we have to take up this challenge," the minister pointed out.

Access to health services, a right

On the other hand, Cevallos stated that another challenge for his tenure as head of Minsa will be to ensure that access to health services becomes a right for every Peruvian citizen.

Remarks were made during the ceremony marking the transfer of power, which took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Health (Minsa).
