The Third National Superior Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Human Rights and Counterterrorism, headed by Superior Prosecutor Andres Montoya Mendoza, secured a life sentence against Florindo Flores, a.k.a. Comrade Artemio, for aggravated terrorism and acts committed in 1996.
According to the facts proven during the trial by Deputy Superior Prosecutor Jackeline Ferrel Munarriz, Artemio was secretary of the Huallaga Regional Committee of the Shining Path (SL) terrorist organization.
In that capacity, he ordered four ambushes against the Armed Forces 30 years ago.
These attacks were carried out on May 31, June 1, July 2, and September 28, 1996.
They took place in hamlets and areas of Tocache province, Peru's northern San Martin region.
As a result of these attacks, seven military personnel were killed and 10 were wounded; two other civilians survived the attacks.
The attacks were led by Florindo Flores, who commanded the T-4 Tocache Battalion, which operated within the Shining Path's Huallaga Regional Committee.
This is the second life sentence secured against him.
He was also ordered to pay S/20,000 (about US$5,940) in civil damages to the Peruvian State.
As is known, Flores is currently serving a first sentence for drug trafficking and terrorism.
Through this action, the Prosecutor's Office reaffirms its institutional commitment to firmly investigating and prosecuting crimes that threaten the democratic order, public peace, and national security.
