12:00 | Urubamba (Cusco region), Nov. 13.

In order to restore forests affected by wildfires and deforestation, the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) is undertaking the reforestation of 570 hectares in the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, the entity's Executive-President Jose Carlos Nieto stated.

Within this framework, the planting of 1,000 trees in the area has been proposed, the official told Andina News Agency.

Nieto clarified that "there is still a gap" regarding the reforestation of what is one of the country's main tourist attractions.

"What we have proposed, along with tourism entrepreneurs and the district municipality, is to plant 1,000 trees for Machu Picchu," he pointed out.

Sernanp –an agency attached to the Ministry of Environment– is making these efforts over approximately 570 hectares.

Protected Area

It is worth noting that the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary is considered a State-protected natural area due to its rich biodiversity in flora and fauna.

Therefore, Sernanp is responsible for protecting it against potential threats.

Regarding this, Nieto stated that a total of 6,000 hectares of the area have been affected by wildfires that occurred in previous years.

"We have a significant team to fight wildfires; we also work with local communities," Nieto indicated.

He added that these efforts have allowed for reversing the situation.

Nieto stated that this work is one of the efforts carried out in the area, together with those of other entities.

In this context, there have also been significant and positive changes regarding waste management in this town of Cusco region, he concluded.
