Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Cesar Llona emphasized before
World Trade Organization (WTO) representatives.
The
Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) on Tuesday participated in the WTO Vice-Ministerial Meeting of Latin American Countries with the aim of coordinating efforts and sharing priorities to address the challenges of international trade.
Deputy Minister Llona presented to the representatives of 12 WTO Members from the Latin American region Peru's views on WTO reform and its expectations for the upcoming Ministerial Conference (MC14) in March 2026.
"Peru maintains a firm commitment to defending the multilateral trading system as a tool to generate growth, inclusion, and economic stability," the government official stated at the event.
"It also urges Members to work toward achievable commitments for the upcoming MC14, with a view to focusing on a pragmatic agenda for this multilateral forum," he added.
The high-ranking official stressed that among the areas requiring attention is the extension of the moratorium on tariffs on electronic commerce, given its role in facilitating the participation of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in global trade.
Similarly, the deputy minister underscored the importance of restoring the WTO dispute settlement system as a cornerstone for ensuring compliance with multilateral trade commitments.
In this regard, Llona highlighted the progress in plurilateral negotiations on domestic regulation in services, e-commerce, and investment facilitation, which represent important tools for advancing at the multilateral level and reaffirm the validity of the forum as a platform for global negotiations.

Lastly, he reaffirmed that Peru will continue to work constructively with countries in the region and with the entire membership to strengthen the WTO as a guarantor of predictable and open trade capable of contributing to sustainable development.
The WTO meetings of Latin American countries are an initiative of the Republic of Chile to unify positions in the region with the aim of ensuring the functioning of the multilateral trading system.
This meeting brought together deputy ministers and representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay.
As is known, the WTO is the organization responsible for regulating international trade among countries. It is composed of 166 members, and Peru stands out as one of the founding members.
During his visit to Chile, Deputy Minister Llona held meetings with his counterparts from the host country and Colombia to strengthen bilateral trade relations.
