Inhabitants in the remote peasant community of Quelcaya —located in Corani district of Carabaya Province (Puno region)— proudly celebrated when they heard the news that their town produced one of the finest alpaca fibers in the world.
This was revealed by the coordinator of the Corani District Municipality's Alpacas Project, Armando Fernandez, who explained that the
alpaca fiber produced in Quelcaya has an average diameter of 15.3 microns (the finest fibers have an average diameter between 16 and 18 microns) and a 11.25% medullation (low average micron counts).
Its 15.3-micron diameter and 11.25% medullation makes it a fiber of very high quality and great potential for all alpaca producers in Corani.
In the case of this Peruvian camelid fiber, the thinner the diameter, the better; so, lighter and thinner clothes can be made for every season of the year.
The alpaca wool is considered the treasure of the Andes due to its great quality, which is clearly better than that of cashmere and sheep wool (commonly used in Persian carpets).
This Peruvian fiber is thermal when it is cold and light when it is hot. It can be used to make sweaters and skirts, as well as bed sheets and tapestries, and even accessories such as purses, handbags, and belts.
Award ceremony
The announcement was made during the ceremony marking the
Alpaca National Day, which took place on Saturday, August 1.
This act gave special recognition to Maximiliano Mamani, the producer and owner of the best alpaca in the area. Recognition was also awarded to other alpaca breeders.
Corani District Mayor Edmundo Caceres appreciated the attendance of producers from the communities of Quelcaya, Chimboya, and Chacaconiza, as well as visitors from Ajoyani, Macusani, Nuñoa, and other parts of this high plateau region.
