Peru: Prosecutor's Office requests 34-year prison sentence for ex-President Pedro Castillo

The Public Ministry has asked for imposing a sentence of 34 years in prison on ex-President Pedro Castillo in the case of constitutional order breakdown perpetrated on December 7, 2022, it was reported on Friday.

The request was submitted by the Second Transitory Supreme Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Crimes Committed by Public Officials.

The ex-Head of State is accused by the Prosecutor's Office of having committed the alleged crimes of rebellion, abuse of authority, and serious disturbance of public peace.

The same office has also requested 25-year imprisonment for then-Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, as well as for ex-Ministers Roberto Sanchez and Willy Huerta.

A similar penalty has been requested for Peruvian National Police (PNP) officers Manuel Lozada, Jesus Venero, and Eder Infanzon.

Anibal Torres

In addition, the Prosecutor's Office has charged former Prime Minister Anibal Torres with the crime of rebellion.

A 15-year prison sentence has been requested for him.

Asimismo, contra Aníbal Torres Vásquez se solicita 15 años de pena privativa de la libertad por el delito de rebelión.

On December 7, 2022, during an address to the nation, then-President Castillo ordered the dissolution of Congress, as well as the reorganization of the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, and other autonomous institutions.

Ex-President Pedro Castillo is currently serving pre-trial detention at Lima's Barbadillo Prison.

As is known, Castillo was constitutionally impeached and removed from office by Parliament on December 7, 2022 —the

day on which he announced a coup

, which was unsuccessful.

He is also investigated for having been the alleged ringleader of a criminal organization.
