During a plenary session, Parliament on Wednesday afternoon approved an impeachment against Pedro Castillo from his position as President of the Republic due to moral incapacity in the exercise of duties.

Parliamentarians approved this measure with 101 votes in favor, 6 against, and 10 abstentions, after completing the nominal voting session; that means, each lawmaker was called to issue their decision.

"The resolution declaring the vacancy of the Presidency of the Republic for the reasons set forth in Subsection 2 of Article 113 of the Constitution, consistent with article 117 of the Political Charter, has been approved," Congress Chairman Jose William Zapata expressed once the final result was announced.

The Parliament's head affirmed that, following the decision taken by Congress, the presidential succession established in Article 115 of the Political Constitution will proceed.

In addition, the plenary session scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (local time) was convened for the Vice-President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, to assume the post of President of the Republic.
