Peru President: Gov't committed to all Coastal El Niño-affected areas

10:29 | Lima, Mar. 27.

President Martin Vizcarra, who is currently on a trip to Piura in northern Peru, affirmed his Government is particularly committed to such region and all regions affected by Coastal El Niño weather event that left thousands of victims last year.

Shortly before leaving for the northern region —hit by Piura River's overflow on 27 March 2017— the leader recalled the event left some 50,000 victims, who lost their homes and had to be relocated to safer areas.

"I think this is a special day to make commitments to Piura and to all regions affected by Coastal El Niño. Making a commitment on the spot is better than doing it from the capital of the Republic, which is far away from the affected area," the newly sworn-in Head of State pointed out.

Mr. Vizcarra's remarks were broadcast on State-run channel TV Peru as he spoke to the media outlet outside his home.

The statesman was about to leave for Piura, where he is expected to pay a working visit as part of his first trip outside the capital city Lima since taking power last week.

"We are going (to Piura) in order to reaffirm our commitment to working across Peru, mainly in regions that suffered the onslaughts of nature," he said.

Shortly before he was inaugurated as President, Vizcarra had affirmed he would be visiting different places on the coast, highlands, and jungle every week —even the most isolated areas— in order to explore the population's problems and needs first hand and to provide the right solutions.
