New Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra finds it imperative to assist all victims of Coastal El Niño weather phenomenon and resume the pending reconstruction process.

In his address to the nation on Friday afternoon, the leader disclosed that one of his administration's pillars will be sustainable infrastructure construction.

"There is much work to be done in our country to make it more economically competitive and fair when it comes to regional distribution along the coast, highland, and jungle. Even more so when reconstruction is pending, urgently needed, and required to do right by all victims," he indicated.

Another priority, he said, is to improve Peruvians' quality of life in order to build a better future for their nation.

The new Head of State pointed out that health, employment promotion, and public safety will be the core themes of his administration.

The civil engineer was sworn in as the new Constitutional President of the Republic in a solemn session today. He will thus replace resigning Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Parliament headquarters in the Peruvian capital Lima.

Shortly after taking the oath of office, Vizcarra was given the presidential sash by Congress Chairman Luis Galarreta, according to protocol.
