National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Jorge Luis Salas on Thursday affirmed that the statement made by Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez —claiming that date for the general elections remains the same— gives certainty to citizens.

The electoral authority deemed as "very important" what the Executive Branch indicated, meaning that there are currently no elements that could lead to postponing the general elections initially scheduled for April 11.

In statements to Ideele Radio, the official indicated that "the safety conditions for citizens are being evaluated" for any decision on the matter.

"I am totally convinced that experts from the Ministry of Health are working to adequately measure the data and signs of the pandemic in the country," he added.

Given its nature, the JNE cannot establish health measures and —therefore— has not issued measures related to the matter or to be implemented in the electoral process, he indicated.

In this regard, Salas welcomed the fact that the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has developed a set of protocols to be followed during election day.

Yet, he said, it is more complex to establish a strategy for the campaign trail. Preventive measures in that field would have to include either "the elimination of public appearances" or establishing "high connotations in terms of limits."

"That must be analyzed by experts, and we will receive the recommendations," Salas expressed.

The official also said he praises the self-regulation that several candidates have imposed on their activities to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Concerning the possibility that the Tribunal of Honor of the Electoral Ethical Pact could sanction those who fail to comply with the regulations or spread false information, he reaffirmed that said instance "does not have the capacity to fine, suspend, or report (candidates), but rather to issue recommendations or publish resolutions."
