Peru: Mining activity generates over US$2.7 billion for regions from Jan to Sept 2025

09:02 | Lima, Nov. 19.

Resource transfers from the mining sector to Peruvian regions totaled S/9.183 billion (about US$2.723 billion) from January to September 2025, corresponding to mining canon, mining royalties, and the right of validity and penalties, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported.

According to the latest edition of the Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM), mining canon remained the largest source of resources, with over S/6.992 billion (US$2.074 billion) transferred.

It marks the second-highest amount ever recorded through this mechanism, which originates from 50% of the Income Tax paid by mining companies.

In terms of mining royalties, more than S/1.933 billion (US$573 million) was transferred between January and September 2025. Of this total, S/1.623 billion (US$481 million) corresponds to legal royalties and S/309 million (US$92 million) to contractual royalties.

Regarding the right of validity and penalties, more than S/256 million (US$76 million) was transferred as of August 2025.

Payments for the right of validity are linked to the number of mining concessions granted, while penalty payments depend on whether the concessions are in production or if the holder is carrying out investments in them.

Minem emphasized that the resources transferred to Peruvian regions are intended to finance investment projects and impactful public works that improve the population's quality of life through the management of national, regional, and local governments.

According to the analysis by regions, Ancash ranked as the largest recipient with S/1.675 billion (US$496 million; 18.2% of the total), followed by Arequipa with S/1.222 billion (US$362 million; 13.3%), Moquegua with S/924 million (US$274 million; 10.1%), and Tacna with S/909 million (US$269 million; 9.9%).

Minem stated that mining reaffirms its role as a driver of national economic growth. Therefore, the sector reiterates its commitment to continue promoting a modern and responsible mining activity, coordinated with regions and citizens, which is key to achieving sustainable and balanced development that benefits all Peruvians.
