Senator Miguel Torres was elected Chairman of the Senate of the Republic for the 2026-2027 legislative term following the voting session to elect the Board held in Parliament on Sunday.
In accordance with the provisions of Congress' Regulations, Torres will serve as Parliament's head during that legislative term.
Following the proclamation of List No. 1 as the winner, Senate Preparatory Committee Secretary Fernando Rospigliosi administered the oath of office to the new Chairman of the Senate.
Torres then called forward the members of the electoral slate he headed, who as of today make up that chamber's Board, to take the oath of office.
They are Alejandro Muñante (Popular Renewal Party), First Vice Chairman; Nilza Chacon (Popular Force Party), Second Vice Chairwoman; and Estanislao Mancha (Popular Renewal Party), Third Vice Chairman of the Senate.
The election of the Popular Force Party representative as Senate Chairman was decided in a second round after neither of the two competing slates secured the required qualified majority in the first round of voting—that is, more than half of the Senate's legally established membership, or 31 votes.
In the second round, only a simple majority was required.
Miguel Torres was elected with 30 votes, while List No. 2, headed by Senator Daniel Barragan (Obras), received 29.
One ballot was declared invalid.
After delivering a speech, Torres formally declared the Senate Preparatory Committee of the chamber he now heads closed and the Senate formally constituted for the 2026-2031 parliamentary term.
He also called the Senate's installation session for the 2026-2027 annual legislative session, scheduled for Monday at 10:00 a.m. (local time).
