The Peruvian Government on Friday expressed its most heartfelt condolences to the family and people of Japan over the passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Via social media, the Presidency of the Republic indicated that Abe will be remembered by Peru "as a friend, for his close ties with the country and for strengthening relations between both nations."

In turn, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs deeply lamented and condemned Abe's assassination, highlighting his legacy and commitment to multilateralism, as well as his contributions —in force today— to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Peru and Japan.

As is known, the former Japanese Prime Minister, 67, died at a hospital on Friday after a gunman opened fire at close range as the hugely influential politician delivered a campaign speech in Nara, AFP reported.

Shinzo Abe served as Prime Minister between 2006-2007, and again between 2012-2020. Thus, he was the leader who has served the longest term in that position in Japan.
