Peru's head coach Ricardo Gareca visited Las Nazarenas Sanctuary in Lima to pray before the Lord of Miracles' image on the eve of his team's departure for Europe to play friendly matches ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Gareca entered the temple at about noon, joined by his coaching staff. Once there, they knelt before the original mural and prayed for several minutes.
They did the same before the replica, which is carried in procession year after year. "I've come to say goodbye to the Lord," he told cloistered sisters.
Last April, the Argentine declared himself to be Roman Catholic Apostolic by baptism and by conviction during a meeting with youth at St. Turibius of Mogrovejo Seminary, which sparked attendees' ovation.
At that time, he said the Purple Christ played an important role: "People played a major role in the qualification process. We never stopped believing and prayed to Lord of Miracles as well," he added.
