Mining employment in Peru reached a record high of 270,095 in August of this year, 10.7% higher than the same month in 2024 (244,013), the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) announced today.
Through the Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM), it indicated that direct employment in the mining sector grew 2.8% last August compared to July of this year (262,786).
“This result represents the highest figure on record and the second consecutive month of sustained growth. The sector reached a new historic record of 270,095 direct jobs in August, more than 7,000 more than the previous month,” Minem emphasized.
It also indicated that in the period from January to August 2025, the average employment generated by mining activity reached 253,923 workers, reflecting a 6% increase compared to the annual average for 2024 (239,561 people).
Regarding the type of employer, mining contractors and related companies accounted for 72.1% of total employment generated, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 14.1%.
Mining companies, meanwhile, accounted for 27.9%, showing an increase of 2.9% compared to the previous year.
According to departmental distribution, Arequipa remained the region with the highest share of mining employment, with 40,541 workers (15% of the national total), followed by Moquegua with 25,982 jobs (9.6%) and La Libertad with 22,846 workers (8.5%).
Female participation in the mining subsector in August 2025 reached a total of 20,825 jobs, equivalent to 7.7% of the national total. Meanwhile, male participation was 249,270 workers, representing 92.3% of the total.
"These results confirm the role of mining as an engine of decentralized development and a source of formal, technical, and well-paid employment, driving the economic and social progress of thousands of Peruvian families", stated the Minem.
