Lima 2019: "We're all set to welcome the best Para athletes in the Americas"

12:05 | Lima, Aug. 16.

The successful Pan American Games still remain in our memory and now Peru gets ready to be part of a wonderful unforgettable experience: the Parapan American Games, whose sixth edition will take place precisely in the Peruvian capital and will run from 23 August to 1 September 2019.

These Games will gather 1,890 Para athletes from 33 countries —including Peru— who will participate in 17 Para sports and 18 disciplines.

The event will bring together men and women with physical, visual and intellectual impairments, among other disabilities.

Lima 2019 is preparing to welcome the athletes, in what is seen as a major step towards universal accessibility at the Parapan American Village and different sports venues, where the action will take place.

Wilhelm Funcke, Lima 2019 Projects and Infrastructure Director, visited the Parapan American Village to supervise the refurbishment of the venue, which will accommodate the Para athletes and technical officials during the celebration of the Games.

"We are putting the last touches in the temporary infrastructure at the Parapan American Village and sporting venues. The final infrastructure will provide complete access, ramps, signage, tactile paving, and bathrooms for people with motor impairments. I am confident these Parapan American Games will be totally accessible to everyone," Funcke said.

The delegations will be accommodated in the apartments located between the 1st and 12th floor of the Village, with all the amenities they need.

"The Village includes four groups of rooms that are accessible to people with motor impairment, spacious passageways, bathrooms that are large enough to accommodate another person when assistance is needed, braille reading system, and emergency lights," he stated.

In addition, thanks to suggestions of Para athletes themselves, the Village in general will offer a path of travel without steps, suitable for wheelchair users.

"The remaining ramps are being installed to provide a perfect route for wheelchairs, although this will be part of the temporary infrastructure."
