UK Amb: There is no room for corruption in Peruvian reconstruction project

00:30 | Lima, Jun. 25.

British Ambassador to Peru Kate Harrisson gave details of the technical assistance that the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will provide for the implementation of 120 projects in regions affected by the 2017 El Niño Phenomenon. They include hospitals, schools, as well as comprehensive solutions for basins, gullies, and drainage systems.

Regarding the anti-corruption safeguards, the Ambassador assured that the UK will work closely with Peruvian agencies and the Comptroller General's Office, as it did in the case of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

Additionally, Harrisson emphasized that the United Kingdom has very strict rules on corruption and bribery.

"Then, any time British companies get into trouble overseas, they must be brought to UK justice," she remarked.

The diplomat went on to say that there is no room for corruption in this endeavour and that the Comptroller General's Office will oversee what happens in Peru.

On the other hand, the UK envoy disclosed that advisory works for the Peruvian reconstruction project will start on July 1.

"We are going to make a diagnosis to check everything we have made in terms of studies and plans. After that, we will cover all phases of the project," she explained.

"We will strive to publish information about the projects in order to attract many companies that may play a role, a large group of companies from Peru and other countries," she added.

As is known, the Republic of Peru and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on Monday signed a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement to provide technical assistance to the Authority for Reconstruction with Changes (ARCC) for preventive and reconstruction works in Peru.
