stated that writer Alvaro Vargas Llosa has accepted her Government's proposal to serve as Peru's Ambassador to the United States, based in Washington, D.C.
"He was consulted about it, and he has accepted this invitation. I believe Alvaro Vargas Llosa will be a great ambassador for Peru to the United States," Fujimori said.
"We are awaiting the formal procedures and protocols that apply to this type of appointment," she added in remarks to RPP.
The Peruvian Head of State noted it was a pleasant surprise that the renowned writer had accepted the proposal for him to assume the position.
"Alvaro was consulted about it, and he gave me the pleasant surprise of answering in the affirmative," Fujimori recalled.
"So, I believe he is a highly experienced Peruvian, and I think he will also be able to further strengthen relations between our two countries," she added.
Vargas Llosa thankful for the trust
Following the top official's statements, Alvaro Vargas Llosa expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him.
The appointee emphasized that he will place his experience, knowledge, and utmost effort at the service of the mission entrusted to him.
"I am deeply grateful to the President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, for the great trust she has placed in me by proposing me to represent the Peruvian State as Peru's Ambassador to the United States of America, based in Washington, D.C.," Vargas Llosa said on X.
"If this appointment is ratified in accordance with the constitutional and legal procedures currently in force in both countries, I will place my experience and knowledge, as well as my utmost effort, at the service of the mission entrusted to me, to safeguard Peru's permanent interests and contribute to this new phase in the bicentennial relationship between our country and the homeland of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson, in line with the course set by the President and in close coordination with Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Espa," he stated.
Vargas Llosa added that he will refrain from making any further statements until the appointment is duly confirmed.
