The
President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, announced that the
Japanese Government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has confirmed US$10 million in machinery aid to address the impact of El Niño phenomenon in Peru.
In this regard, the Head of State said her administration "has been knocking on many doors" to address some of the problems that the phenomenon, expected to be quite severe, could cause.
"I have held meetings with Japanese technical cooperation officials, for example, because the ambassador had informed me that Peru had not formally requested support," Fujimori stated.
"We did so immediately, and the president of JICA, the cooperation agency, came. Yesterday, they confirmed that Japan will provide Peru with $10 million worth of machinery to address El Niño phenomenon," she added in remarks to Exitosa radio.
The top official expressed her gratitude to the Hombro a Hombro Foundation, a private-sector organization that is also supporting efforts to address potential problems caused by heavy rainfall in Peru's northern and central zones.
Moreover, the President said cleanup, desilting, bridge reinforcement and riverbank protection works have already begun to ensure the population's safety.
"The priority is to work together," Fujimori added.
Therefore, she acknowledged the coordination achieved with regional and local governments and the private sector to strengthen cooperation in addressing El Niño.
