Peru President: Over US$2 billion will be invested in Reconstruction with Changes

13:21 | Lima, Jun. 22.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday announced that some S/7 billion (over US$2.020 billion) will be invested in the execution of the Reconstruction with Changes Program over a period of two years.

As is known, said weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides, and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.

Today, the Head of State specified that an amount higher than S/1 billion (above US$288 million) will be allocated to nine regions of the country following the signing of the government-to-government agreement until completion of the current year.

In this sense, the Head of State specified that the regions of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima, Ica, Huancavelica, and Cajamarca are the ones to directly benefit from this contract.

The Peruvian leader recalled that he had met the British high-ranking official in 2018. At that time, the foreign leader paid a visit to Lima to sign a document of the same nature aimed at boosting the Lima 2019 Pan American Games' works.

The top official indicated that —just as the goals proposed in the Pan American Games were rigorously met— the same should happen under this contract, which includes the development of health infrastructure and education projects, as well as a level of intervention —on a permanent basis— in the river basins with the aim of avoiding future disasters.

The event took place at the Lima-based Government Palace within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the quarantine was extended until June 30.

Monday marks the ninety-ninth day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
