President Vizcarra highlights measures implemented to safeguard Peruvians during 100 days

14:22 | Lima, Jun. 23.

On the 100th day of quarantine, President Martin Vizcarra stressed that the measures —adopted by the Government to contain the advance of the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru— were necessary and sought to safeguard the health of all citizens.

The Head of State affirmed that on Wednesday —following the Council of Ministers session— he will give an account of the 100 days of the national state of emergency.

"Since that day, March 15, we have not rested a single day so as to analyze the situation and take the appropriate measures to combat this disease. Today, 100 days later, we have to ratify that all actions were taken thinking about what matters the most to the country: its people, the human beings, as well as the individual and collective interests, which are part of our society," he expressed.

"The true assessment will be made by history, unlike the many experts in pandemics, in coronaviruses, who are now emerging and expressing their criteria and conclusions. It is history the one that will judge the decisions we made at the appropriate times and what we achieved with those decisions for the sake of the country and Peruvians (…)," he underlined.

In this sense, top official said that 100 days mean a sufficient and necessary period of time to evaluate the actions taken, and the Government will do so tomorrow following a new session of the Council of Ministers.

"I want to thank all Peruvians for joining us in this process that does not end, as there is still a long way to go. Yet, thanks to the confidence and commitment of Peruvians as well as of friendly countries, we have no doubts that we will be successful against this disease, and then —with the resumption of activities economic— we will be placed on the development path," he stated.

"So, let's have faith, confidence, and optimism. Thanks to the courage, strength, and determination, Peru has always been able to overcome these problems, and COVID-19 will not be the exception. We will overcome it, and we will remain on the development path for the sake of all Peruvians," he concluded.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the quarantine was extended until June 30.

Tuesday marks the one hundredth day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
