Peru President: We are in a true process of reactivating the economy

13:48 | Lima, Jun. 15.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed that Peru is in a frank economic reactivation process, with the implementation of Phases 1 and 2 of productive activities resumption.

"We are in a frank process of reactivating the economy, and we can say that —thanks to the measures which have been taken in Phase 1 and Phase 2this process is on the way towards recovering the production capacity we have in Peru," he expressed.

The Head of State commented that —in the first stage— the Government detected that companies had faced some administrative problems in obtaining permits and restarting their operations.

"We have to ensure the private activities, which had to stop and turned their engines off for a long time, that they will be turned on and join forces to generate the jobs and growth that we had lost over recent months," he added.

The top official also recalled that the Government was very clear when it announced that the economy would suffer due to the social isolation measures taken aimed at stopping the COVID-19 contagion, mainly in the second half of March and throughout the month of April.

"It was clear that those would be the most difficult months in the economic sphere and in the impact on employment. Now, we see that the economic figures in April ratify the projection made by the Economy and Finance directors and professionals at the Council of Ministers (session)," he explained.

"Last April, our economy had been operating at 44% of its capacity, that means 56% was paralyzed for abiding by the Government-enacted measures," he concluded.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the quarantine was extended until June 30.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the ninety-second day of mandatory social isolation in Peru.
