Peru's President: We must be more united than ever for independence anniversary

11:42 | Lima, Jul. 23.

President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that Peru's 199th Independence Anniversary, to be commemorated on July 28, is a historic date on which Peruvians need to be more united than ever in the fight against COVID-19.

This unity, he said, will contribute to the construction of a stronger, more just and developed country, just as the founders of the Republic and great heroes dreamed.

According to the Peruvian leader, the Air Force has shown a vocation for service and its commitment to Peru during this national emergency, by providing human resources to support the police in patrolling the streets, as well as operational and logistical assistance.

Day after day, Air Force planes and helicopters fly to different regions carrying doctors, nurses and public servants, as well as tests, medical supplies, personal protective equipment and oxygen.

"In recent months, the Callao Air Base has received thousands of compatriots who returned on humanitarian flights, and a mobile hospital was set up to reinforce the epidemiological surveillance," he added.

Remarks were made in the ceremony marking the 79th anniversary of Captain Jose Quiñones' immolation and the Peruvian Air Force Day, held at Las Palmas Air Base located in Lima.
