Peru Defense Min: Armed forces, police to support compliance with new regulations

10:30 | Lima, Jun. 28.

Defense Minister Walter Martos affirmed that the Armed Forces and Peruvian National Police (PNP) will contribute to citizens complying with the regulations established for a new coexistence during the localized quarantine aimed at coping with the coronavirus (COVID- 19) pandemic in Peru.

The high-ranking official indicated that the long quarantine phase served to achieve some objectives set by the Government, such as learning about this virus and how to protect people from it.

"As long as the emergency lasts, the Armed Forces and the National Police will help the entire population comply with these three main regulations (wearing face masks, maintaining social distance, and washing hands constantly) wherever they are; for example, at bus stops, markets, or wherever there is a large concentration of people," he said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.

In this sense, the Cabinet member noted that his sector joined district mayors by supporting municipal supervisors when verifying that commercial establishments comply with the corresponding protocol.

Lastly, the minister specified that the Government will also contribute to preventing overcrowdings at bus stops. Therefore, his portfolio —along with the Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU)— will verify compliance with the decree to come into force on July 1.
