The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Saturday called on Peruvians to stand united in order to work together against the coronavirus pandemic.

"Discord among Peruvians creates the most terrible failures; I believe we must call for unity and set aside any differences," the Head of State told RPP radio and TV station.

In this sense, the official questioned the way ministers and other officials are treated by legislators, whose behavior is characterized by insults and threats.

"This is not the way to make democracy," he noted.

Concerning the case of former Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti —who stepped down from post last Friday— the top official indicated that she used to be subjected to outrageous interrogations by lawmakers, which were characterized by insults, repeated questions, and baseless claims.

"It is time to reflect, ministers should not be treated in such a way at this critical time," Mr. Sagasti emphasized.
