Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday affirmed that it is essential to achieve greater closeness and unity with the Armed Forces —particularly the Army— as well as with citizens to face threats and opportunities.

As he remarked, the events and new threats to security that humanity is facing make it necessary to review the conceptions about the national defense doctrine, the role played by technological advances, the pandemic, climate change, inequalities, political polarization, and authoritarian impulses that must be rejected.

The Peruvian Army, he underlined, has embarked on a process for renewal of ideas, concepts, management, and the way it organizes its operations.

"I welcome the effort made to update the conceptions about the national defense doctrine," the President expressed.

"In order to face the threats and take advantage of the opportunities in the new international context, it is essential to achieve greater closeness and stronger unity with the Armed Forces —the Army in particular— and all citizens," he stated.

"This is the task that I commit to as Head of State and Government during the short time that this transitional and emergency Government will be in office, recalling the example of my grandfather and great-grandfather, worthy members of the Army," the statesman added.

Remarks were made in a ceremony marking the National Army Day and the 196th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, held on Wednesday morning at Mariscal Caceres Square located inside the Army Headquarters in Lima's San Borja district.

During the event, he conveyed his greetings to the members of the Army, including soldiers who are protecting the borders, as well as those who patrol wild territories and consolidate peace in places as difficult as the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM).
