The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday made a call for unity, as well as to remove hatred and resentment from all spheres of national life —especially politics.

From Pampa de la Quinua, the Head of State said the ceremony for the 196th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho comes at a time when the country is battling the
COVID-19 pandemic, which is causing thousands of casualties.

Within this framework, the top official recalled that independence —which consolidated thanks to the victory in Ayacucho in 1824— opened the possibility of building a republic of citizens with equal rights and making the dream of a free and fair Peru a reality for all.

In addition, the statesman stressed how essential it is to work together, as well as to remove hatred and resentment from all areas of national life —especially politics.

"I invite Peruvians to renew that commitment," he emphasized.

Mr. Sagasti said he is confident that in 2024 —when the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho will be celebrated— the nation will be firm on the path towards becoming more free and just, as the founding fathers had dreamed of.

The Peruvian leader also recalled that the bicentennial agenda was launched in Ayacucho.

As is known, the Battle of Ayacucho consolidated the independence of Peru in 1824.
