Prime Minister Walter Martos on Saturday affirmed that —today more than ever— Peru must defend democracy and the governability of the country.

In a public statement, the Cabinet chief affirmed that the Executive Branch has decided to adopt all the legal tools and laws granted by the Constitution with the aim of facing the attempt to alter the constitutional order by Congress, which is promoting an impeachment motion against President Vizcarra.

The high-ranking official reaffirmed that the President leads a democratic administration, respectful of the separation and independence of powers, as well as of the fundamental rights and freedoms.

Martos considered it important to ratify these principles at the crucial moment the country is facing due to the COVID-19 health crisis, adding that "some anti-democratic sectors with clear subaltern interests seek to destabilize the democratic order and plunge the country into an even greater crisis."

"Faced with this scenario, the Government will act as it has always done, within the framework of the Political Constitution and current regulations," he expressed.

In this sense, "we reaffirm our firm commitment to the rule of law. Today, more than ever, we have the obligation to defend democracy and guarantee governability."

Likewise, the official said that the population must be sure that the Government will continue working united to guarantee institutionality and democracy in the country.

He also reiterated his call on Congress members to reflect and act responsibly so that they do not lend themselves to attempts by some sectors, which seek to destabilize the country.

Remarks were made following a Council of Ministers session held at the Government Palace in Lima.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Martos was joined by Ministers Jorge Chavez (Defense), Cesar Gentille (Interior), Ana Neyra (Justice-Human Rights), and members of the Armed Forces.
