Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez affirmed that general elections have already been called, when asked about Somos Peru political party's request to postpone them claiming an increase in COVID-19 infections.

According to the high-ranking official, the Executive Branch has held meetings with representatives of electoral organizations to discuss the process, and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has adopted seven protocols to guarantee safety during the elections.

Likewise, the Cabinet chief stated that support of police and the armed forces will be available in order to ensure safety during the voting process.

In this sense, Bermudez indicated that a sanitary protocol is currently being developed for the electoral campaign, after lamenting that some candidates have been infected with COVID-19.

Furthermore, she deemed as important to remind the Peruvian population of the safety measures, such as the use of face masks, constant hand washing, and physical distancing.

“We are a Transition and Emergency Government that has the mission of transferring the government management,” she concluded.
