Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elizabeth Astete on Saturday morning affirmed that the Government's objective is to ensure a sufficient number of vaccines against COVID-19 for the first quarter of 2021, in order to facilitate the participation of citizens in the general elections scheduled for April 11.

"The negotiations are very advanced; the President (Francisco Sagasti) himself is involved in the matter. We are sure that we can ensure a sufficient number of vaccines for the first quarter of 2021," she told RPP radio and TV station.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official confirmed the agreements signed with U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the COVAX Facility to access 9.9 million doses in the first case, and 13 million in the second one.

Likewise, the diplomat noted that the Government is holding conversations and negotiations with other laboratories such as Sinopharm and AstraZeneca because "this is about having several options" as it is not known how long the immunization against the new coronavirus will last.

"We will have the need to rely on the largest number of vaccines to ensure the protection of people's health," she expressed.

Last Thursday, the Cabinet member participated in the meeting of the multisectoral commission in charge of carrying out the necessary actions for the development, production, acquisition, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. It is led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Concerning the conservation, distribution, and application of the vaccine in the country, Astete pointed out that Minister Mazzetti evaluates different possibilities and scenarios to fulfill such task.
