The first challenge of the current Government —which takes office today— is to ensure that general elections in April 2021 "run smoothly and in a completely fair manner," the recently-sworn-in President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti said on Tuesday.

Additionally, the Head of State emphasized that his administration will work to make Peru an inclusive country with opportunities for all.

Remarks were made on Tuesday afternoon in a Parliament solemn session in which he addressed the nation after being sworn in as President of the Republic.

Francisco Sagasti has become the new President of the Republic until July 28, 2021. He replaces resigning Manuel Merino, who stepped down last Sunday —after less than one week in office and amid major protests.

Given that he has assumed the Presidency of the Republic, Parliament's First Vice Chairwoman Mirtha Vasquez has become Congress' main official.
