Peru's FA Min: All measures are being taken to ensure security at APEC

Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea on Thursday underscored that the Government is taking all the necessary actions to ensure security during the APEC Peru 2024 Summit, which will be attended by over 10,000 people.

The Cabinet member said that it is not an easy task. However, he indicated, the Foreign Affairs Ministry is working jointly with other sectors to achieve this objective and showcase our best qualities as hosts.

"We are in the development process, taking all the appropriate, necessary, and preventive measures, considering all scenarios to ensure the full security and successful celebration that APEC represents," he expressed.

Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea announced that this edition will far exceed the initially estimated number of 10,000 people, by 40 to 50%.

The Cabinet member added that this reconfirms "the growing level of political and commercial engagement of Peru in the world."

The government official specified that the Government has already completed issuing all official invitations to APEC leaders and is receiving the respective confirmations.

He mentioned that, as the host of APEC, Peru has the opportunity to invite leaders of various economies or other prominent international actors, such as Brazil.

In this regard, Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea indicated that the neighboring country has already confirmed its participation through diplomatic channels.

He added that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has also announced this through the media, expressing his interest in commercial exchange with the Asian country via the Chancay Megaport.

"Brazil's participation is strategic for Peru in terms of potentially increasing the use of facilities and trade frequencies towards all of Asia by utilizing the Chancay-to-Shanghai route," Gonzalez-Olaechea indicated.

Remarks were made during the Microsoft scholarship launch ceremony at Torre Tagle Palace in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
