Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez on Thursday announced Peruvian and Chinese officials will begin a series of bilateral meetings in April to upgrade the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) existing between the two nations.

As is known, the Asian Giant is one of the most important economies in the world and the main trade partner of the Inca country for five years in a row.

It should be noted the accord was signed on April 28, 2009, in Beijing and came into force on March 1, 2010.

In this sense, the official highlighted this accord has become a key tool to strengthen the trade relations uniting both nations

Bilateral trade rose 15%, thus exceeding US$20 billion between January and November 2018.

"This first meeting will take place in Beijing," he said.

Close relation

On the other hand, Peru currently participates in the initiative led by China called One Belt, One Road, which includes plans for cooperation concerning infrastructure and the improvement of connectivity among the nations.

"We are sure this historic and deep relation between our countries will continue to be invigorated in the next years through the upgrade of the FTA, as well as through initiatives such as One Belt, One Road," Minister Vasquez expressed.

"It will enable our countries to strengthen their strategic position in the region and generate a sustainable economic growth that will benefit both countries," he added.

Remarks were made during the protocol ceremony of the Chinese New Year. This event was organized by the Chinese Embassy in Peru
