Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio met with China's Vice-President Wang Qishan on the occasion of his official visit to the Asian Giant.

Popolizio's presence in China is intended to deepen the relationship and cooperation between the two nations.

The audience took place Monday at Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of China's central government in Beijing.

China's Vice-President stressed that it was a great pleasure to welcome the Peruvian delegation.

"Both countries have enjoyed a lasting friendship, and the Chinese community in Peru dates back about 400 years (…)," Wang Qishan pointed out.

For his part, Popolizio remarked Peru is the country with the largest and oldest Chinese migrant population in South America.

"People of Peru and China are heirs to a millenary basis. This highly important historical legacy really constitutes the fundamental basis of this close relationship in terms of friendship and cooperation," he added.

Popolizio currently pays an official visit to China, where he is slated to meet with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi within the framework of the 10th Meeting of the Political Consultations Mechanism, which has been relaunched after eight years.

On this occasion, the two nations will address the development of bilateral ties over the last period, as well as the perspectives of the Joint Action Plan for 2016-2021.

Issues of common interest at both regional and multilateral levels —particularly at the APEC forum— will be discussed as well.

Moreover, the Peruvian official will co-chair the 3rd Meeting of the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism for Economic Cooperation.
