Peru President requests population to vote in Sunday's referendum

17:35 | Puno (Puno region), Dec. 4.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday urged the population to massively go to the polls for a referendum on December 9 and to make a decision —with their vote— on the four reforms submitted by the Executive Branch to Congress.

"We want you to go and decide. The President and Congress will respect what the population says. That is why it is important, as the people decide with their vote what Congress and the President will do," the Head of State expressed.

Likewise, the statesman asked citizens to assess the four questions and to determine their point of view.

In this sense, the top official explained the first question is regarding the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) —now renamed National Justice Board. This institution is in charge of appointing judges and prosecutors in the Inca country.

The second topic addresses political parties' private financing, asking if their funding should be overseen.

The third reform concerns the immediate re-election of lawmakers. As is known, the immediate re-election of mayors, governors, and the president is not allowed in Peru.

Lastly, the fourth question refers to the return to a bicameral parliamentary system, with a chamber of representatives and another one of senators.
