Peru President questions Congress' preliminary ruling against university reform

12:42 | Lima, Jun. 12.

President Martin Vizcarra on Friday questioned the preliminary ruling of Congress' Education Commission, which intends to reverse the progress of the university reform in Peru.

Within this framework, the Head of State requested lawmakers to learn from history, as it demands the strengthening of health and education sectors, a work to be done by authorities as a whole, he noted.

Likewise, the top official emphasized that there are very large deficits in both sectors, which must continue to be addressed and not neglected.

In this sense, the statesman insisted on the need to join efforts in order to improve the quality of health and education, "not enacting regulations that intend to surprise and backtrack on what we have moved forward."

"We have always seen that —when it comes to rules approved in an unexpected way— it means that someone is behind (...)," he expressed.

The top official called for action and efforts for the benefit of health, healthy eating, and education. "All that is demanded by Peruvians, and authorities must comply with it," he added.

The Congress' Education Commission has drafted a preliminary ruling that proposes the creation of a new instance —more powerful than the State-run National Superintendence of Higher University Education (Sunedu), which would review the appeals that could eventually be submitted by private universities which have been denied licenses.

For his part, Education Minister Martin Benavides warned that —if such a proposal succeeds— it would be the most serious blow against the accurate university reform started in 2014.
