Peru President: Medication prices, generic product sales under assessment

13:33 | Lima, Jun. 17.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed medicine prices are currently under assessment, as well as the sale of generic products at pharmacies, stressing his administration prioritizes the main interest of Peruvian citizens, not of big companies.

"It cannot be possible that in Peru, medication prices are higher than the ones in Europe or the United States, and because of our own rules," the Head of State told Exitosa Radio.

According to the top official, pharmacies in the country are not required to sell generic medicines. Thus, people buy brand products, offered with a fixed price.

Reconstruction

On the other hand, the top official underlined S/7 billion (around US$ 2.12 billion) will be invested in the reconstruction process this year, over three times the figure registered in 2017 and 2018.

The corresponding infrastructures were damaged by Coastal El Niño phenomenon in 2017. Said weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides, and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.

Governor

Likewise, he pointed out all complaints against him —while he served as Moquegua Region Governor (2011-2014)— have been investigated and shelved. He went on to add these had been part of a political conspiracy against him.
