Peru President ensures transparency in parliamentary elections

11:35 | Lima, Oct. 7.

President of Peru Martin Vizcarra has ensured that parliamentary elections called for January 26, 2020 will be transparent.

"The Government guarantees absolute neutrality," the Head of State told El Comercio newspaper, when asked about his role in the electoral campaign.

According to the top official, he has requested Foreign Affairs Minister Gustavo Meza-Cuadra to carry out the necessary arrangements, so recognized international organizations can appoint a delegation in charge of verifying the transparency of the electoral process.

"Our role as government is to guarantee the honesty and transparency of this electoral process," he expressed.

Likewise, the statesman indicated he is sure that good candidates —willing to work for the country— will run for Congress, and citizens will know who to choose.

"All citizens must make an effort to elect (…) the best candidates," President Vizcarra added.

Last week, by means of a supreme decree, the Executive Branch called new parliamentary elections for January 26, 2020

The document also confirmed the dissolution of Congress, which failed to deliver a vote of confidence in two Cabinets of the same Government (2016-2021).

The supreme decree was signed by President Vizcarra and Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos.
