Peru PM: Parliamentary election process is underway

Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos said on Wednesday that Peru's parliamentary election process is underway, adding that electoral bodies have taken actions already.

"Concerning the elections, a decision has already been made. There is no going back," the high-ranking official expressed.

To that end, a National Election Board's (JNE) resolution —which specifies the official closing date for the compilation of the electoral register— has been published in El Peruano official gazette.

On Tuesday, by means of a supreme decree, the Executive Branch called new parliamentary elections for January 26, 2020.

The document also confirmed the dissolution of Congress, which failed to deliver a vote of confidence in two Cabinets of the same Government (2016-2021).
